Reaver: Cracks WPA in 10 hours, WPA attack tool released by TNS

Just a day after security researcher Stefan Viehbock released details of vulnerabilities in the WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) protocol that allows attackers to recover WPA/WPA2 passphrases in a matter of hour, a security firm "Tactical Network Solutions" has published an open-source tool capable of exploiting the vulnerability.

Reaver is WPS attack tool ,capable of breaking WPS pins and recovering the plain text WPA/WPA2 passphrase of the target access point in approximately 4-10 hours (attack time varies based on the access point).

Picture Password Introduced by Microsoft for Windows 8

The experience of signing in to your PC with touch has traditionally been a cumbersome one. In a world with increasingly strict password requirements—with numbers, symbols, and capitalization—it can take upwards of 30 seconds to enter a long, complex password on a touch keyboard. To get rid of all these stuffs Microsoft is introducing a new technology. Using that you can login ti your Windows 8 PC with a picture password. Likely designed for touchscreens, users are prompted with a familiar picture of their choice and asked to make a series of finger gestures on the screen to setup password protection. Microsoft recommends that users pick at least three gestures and can choose between a circle, a tap and a line drawn between two points. When a user logs into a Windows 8 machine using Picture Password, they simply have to replicate the correct placement, order and direction of all gestures.

Microsoft dictates the set of three different gestures after research showed that login time was cut from 17 seconds using free form gestures to 4 seconds using preset gestures. Users don’t have to be 100 percent accurate with the placement of the gestures as the image is broken up into a grid and the combination of replicating the three gestures is assigned a percentage score each time the login process is attempted through an algorithm. If the score is 90 percent or above, the user gains access to the system. Microsoft also outlined how security is increased with the Picture Password method. For instance, if a user creates a six-character text password with at least one uppercase letter and one number, there would be 7 billion combinations available. However, if a user creates a picture password with six gestures using only taps, that number increases to 1.3 trillion combinations. Even further, reducing the amount of gestures to five and including at least one circle and one line gesture within the group increases the number of combinations to approximately 70 trillion. The Windows engineering team has just started building the Picture Password functionality and hopes to include it within the final version of Windows 8 likely released during 2012.

SMS Attack Vulnerability In Windows Phone 7.5

Khaled Salameh discovered a serious vulnerability on Windows phone 7.5 "Mango". He reported this vulnerability to WinRumors & Microsft.  If and when a security patch will be released from Microsoft's end to fix the issue is still unclear.

In an exclusive report it has been said that the Messaging Hub on Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" devices can be completely disabled using a specially crafted SMS message. When a Windows Phone device receives the message, it causes the device to reboot and prevents the Messaging Hub from loading despite repeat attempts to open it. This Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack can also be exploited by sending a message from Facebook chat or Windows Live Messenger to the phone.

Tom Warren fo WinRumor says that the only way to fix a device affected by the problem is to perform a hard reset and wipe the device, during which all personal data will be lost. They have also tested the attack on several phones such as the HTC TITIAN and the Samsung Focus Flash. These included devices running the 7740 build (7.10.7740.16) of Windows Phone 7.5 and Mango RTM build 7720 (7.10.7720.68).

Android app gives you free Web access via texting

 

Getting something for nothing is awfully hard to resist. If you have T-Mobile's unlimited messaging plan for your Android phone, the "something" is Web access and "for nothing" means no data plan required.
Smozzy is an Android app that cleverly packages communications between Android browser and Web as messages transmitted via T-Mobile's text messaging service. The result is slow but free Web access (given that you have T-Mobile's unlimited messaging plan).
Under this scheme, Web requests are sent via SMS to Smozzy's server, which retrieves the pages and returns them to your phone via MMS. The tricky part is in how Smozzy fits the camel through the needle's eye. The Smozzy server chops up a Web page, zips each piece, packages the zip files as PNGs, and sends the faux image files via MMS. The app unpacks the files and reassembles the Web page.
Smozzy's Android Market page includes these caveats from the developer, Jeff Donahue:

This app currently works with U.S. T-MOBILE SERVICE ONLY. This application may send and receive a large number of messages, so use of it without an unlimited messaging plan is NOT recommended. It is currently in beta, and has been tested only on Nexus S and HTC G2 devices.

ExtremeTech's Sebastian Anthony lays out some of the app's downsides:

There are some security issues, of course--there's no encryption (though some could be added), so passwords are sent as plaintext--and the entire service currently runs through one man's, cheap-and-cheerful VPS, so it would be unwise to rely on Smozzy being available. It's also incredibly likely that T-Mobile will close this hole, so you probably shouldn't use Smozzy as an excuse to cancel your overpriced data plan and transfer to T-Mobile.

Still, you've got to admire the creativity, and hey, free is free--for as long as it lasts.
Donahue is considering extending the app to other unlimited messaging services beyond T-Mobile, but he's not sure about other platforms, he said. "It was quite a bit of work getting it to work on Android."
Smozzy is a beta release. Donahue is taking a wait-and-see approach before deciding whether to do a commercial release and figuring out how to charge for it, he said. And yes, T-Mobile could shut him down. "I don't think there's much I can do if they block me," he said.

Hacker's Take Over NBC News Twitter Account

A Twitter account belonging to NBC News was hacked on Friday evening by an entity that claimed, falsely, that an airplane had crashed at the site of ground zero in New York.
The account was swiftly taken offline and the news division apologized. The incident was deemed serious enough that the news anchor Brian Williams read the apology out loud on the “NBC Nightly News.”
“The NBC News Twitter account was hacked late this afternoon and as a result, false reports of a plane attack on ground zero were sent to @NBCNews followers,” the statement issued by the news division and read by Mr. Williams said. “We are working with Twitter to correct the situation and sincerely apologize for the scare that could have been caused by such a reckless and irresponsible act.”
The NBC Twitter account had about 130,000 followers, only a fraction of whom likely saw the Twitter message when it was posted. Still, the false claim rippled across the short messaging Web site in a matter of minutes, alarming some people on a day of heightened anxieties about potential terrorist attacks. Authorities have warned of a nonspecific bomb threat possibly tied to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The attacks will be commemorated at ground zero on Sunday.
The false claim was knocked down with impressive speed on Friday, suggesting that both Twitter and news organizations are learning how to grapple with such incidents.
Ryan Osborn, the director of social media for NBC News, said he saw the hackers’ Twitter message appear online about 40 seconds after it was posted. He was already logged into the account and quickly realized that the password had been changed. “We are taking this breach very seriously,” said Mr. Obsorn, who said the organization has existing security and password policies in place.
Mr. Osborn contacted officials at Twitter, and he said they suspended the account within eight minutes, including the account that claimed responsibility for the hack.
What helped minimize the spread of misinformation was that employees inside NBC News — and others on Twitter who recognized that the account had been hacked — immediately sent out tweets saying so. “We have a great community throughout this building and throughout the Web,” Mr. Osborn said. “It was great to see people correct such terrible misinformation.”
He added, “For anyone who works in journalism, it is terrifying to see people not respect facts. It is scary.”
Twitter declined to comment on the incident, citing a policy against commenting on individual accounts. In July, when a Twitter account belonging to Fox News was hacked and was used to disseminate false claims about President Obama, the Web site issued this series of tips about account security.
Twitter said earlier this week that it now had about 100 million active users each month, some of whom depend on the service for news and information.

New App Store Launched by Skype

Skype has launched its own app store, or app directory as it's called, offering its users third-party apps that can integrate with the company's online calling and messaging service.

Third-party apps have been available through Skype in the past, but this is the company's first effort to host a more official app store where people can search for, browse, and download the software they want.

Skype users can browse a list of all apps--for now the store offers only around 23 apps. Alternatively, people can click on different categories, such as business, call recording, and desktop sharing to drill down further.

You can search for an app by a specific name or keyword, though in my testing, the search feature didn't deliver accurate results. An advanced search that lets you hunt down apps by category, cost, and platform, seemed to work more reliably.

Among the selections, you'll find such apps as VodBurner Video Call Recorder, which lets you record your Skype video calls; InnerPass Screen Sharing, which lets you share your desktop and other screens during a call; and VuRoom, which expands on Skype's video conferencing and collaboration features for business users.

Some of the apps are free; some cost a few dollars or more. Clicking on the page for a specific app will display more details about it, including its features and requirements, a brief description, and any ratings or comments from other users. Skype also displays a window at the top of the app directory where you can scroll to see new apps, the top free apps, and the top paid apps.

Developers who've built their own app for Skype can submit it to the company for a potential spot in the directory. And with only 23 apps right now, there's certainly room for a lot more

Google TV headed to The U.K

Google could be bringing Google TV to the good ol' U of K within the next six months, the Telegraph reports.
Google TV is built on Google's own Android operating system, and will basically put the Chrome Web browser inside your TV, letting you search the Web and stream video from TV providers, or watch your own videos.
Google TV lets you run Android apps on your TV, something we suspect has huge potential. Imagine a spot of Angry Birds on a massive screen, for example, or having Spotify streaming over your telly during a crazy party.
The service runs through a set-top box, but in the US Sony sells TVs with Google TV built-in. We'd love to see some of these heading to the UK in the near future, so we'll be keeping a close eye during IFA, the big tech conference in Germany that kicks off next week.
Google chairman Eric Schmidt is giving a lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival this evening, so we could hear more then.
Previously we thought Google TV would never find a home among our dark, satanic mills -- the Big G said it had "no plans beyond the US" in May last year. But maybe, just maybe, Google has seen fit to spread the love around. We suspect we'll be hearing more shortly.
The concept of streaming video through your telly is nothing new -- loads of set-top boxes and TVs already offer services such as YouTube and BBC iPlayer. But we'd hope one from Google would be easier to use than most, and would feature more delicious video content.

4G Could mean the End of Unemployment for Nearly Half a Million Americans

Believe it or not, but higher demand for faster ways to find a phone number for take-out and other mobile device desires could spur the creation of between 300,000 and 800,000 jobs within the United States according to a report released by Deloitte professional services. The implementation of 4G networks across the American landscape is a process much more sophisticated than previous network constructions.

Evolving to the speeds and connectivity associated with 4G is expected to cost near or around 100 to 150 billion dollars across all telecommunications companies. This, in turn, will drive not only immediate employment demands, but the establishment of peripheral industries that will employ further individuals.

But people shouldn't start scouring the classified just yet.

First off, there's increasing doubt being cast on American telecommunications providers when it comes to what defines 4G. Some are skating around the universally accepted International Telecommunications Union recommended definition of 4G, and, instead, marketing their new networks as 4G when they are in fact merely beefed up versions of preexisting 3G networks.

Secondly, let's not forget that data capacity within the American mobile service spectrum continues to be a major problem. Once the military and other priorities take their fair share, the little that is left can barely accommodate the several million 4G mobile devices expected to use these networks.

The boom projected by Deloitte assumes the development, creation, and implementation of 4G in the United States is going to be identical to what's been seen in the development of Asian and European 4G networks. However, it seems that as far as the telecommunications providers themselves are concerned, there isn't any immediate plan to follow suit with the global 4G norm. This could be due to the fact that our already extremely limited number of mobile service providers are in the midst of what could possibly be further mergers down the road. Nobody at the top wants to spend money on a new network if the industry is about to change in a year or so.

The Deloitte report looked ahead at what they consider to be a most definite demand for 4G in America that will be most likely to create more jobs. But they fail to factor in the American corporate propensity to think ahead only when it's profitable, and create opportunities only when their necessary for company objectives to be met.

In the meantime, millions of Americans await authentic 4G, while as many millions continue to look for work.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive officer of Apple (AAPL). The company has promoted chief operating officer Tim Cook to the position of CEO and said that Cook will join the company's board of directors. Jobs will become Apple's chairman.

Microsoft is reportedly Locking down its Latest Windows 8 Build

Microsoft is reportedly locking down its latest Windows 8 build to prevent unauthorized people from installing it and leaking details about certain features, according to a story yesterday from WinRumors.
Some details about the latest Windows 8 build known as 8064 were already revealed a couple of days ago by WinRumors and other sources. The new build is apparently the Windows 8 Developer Preview that Microsoft is likely to unveil at its Build conference next month.
But in an attempt to thwart unauthorized users from accessing the new developer build, Microsoft has apparently set up unique product keys that are now required to install the operating system.
An internal e-mail from Intel published by WinRumors announced that generic product keys previously included with the builds would no longer be supported or available. Instead, people working with the new build would have to obtain new, special product keys. Though the e-mail is specific to Intel, tech site The Next Web sees it as unlikely that Intel would be singled out for this new process.
In a further attempt to lock down the new build from leaks, Microsoft has also reportedly taken steps to prevent users from hacking into DLL files to uncover hidden features, said WinRumors, citing information from users posting at the My Digital Life forum.
One poster on the forum who allegedly managed to peek at the new build revealed a few of the changes found, including a new boot-up screen, new wallpaper, and an Internet Explorer 10 Developer Preview, but no Windows Media Center or Windows DVD Maker.
Microsoft President Steven Sinofsky revealed in a blog earlier this week that the company would unveil a prerelease version of Windows 8 over the coming months. Though WinRumors believes he was likely referring to the Developer Preview edition, Sinofsky's blog seemed geared toward more than just developers, so an actual beta of the new OS could still surface over the next several months.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for further details.

'App Store' a New Windows 8 Feature

An app store is officially among the features Microsoft is working to include in Windows 8, much like Apple's App Store for OS X.
The revelation, which confirmed months of rumors, came today from Microsoft President Steven Sinofsky in a Building Windows 8 blog titled "Introducing the team." Among a list of teams associated with building the forthcoming operating system was "App Store."
Sinofsky said that work on the new OS is organized by feature teams, of which there are about 35, each containing 25 to 40 developers.
"Many of the teams listed below describe features or areas that you are familiar with or that you can probably figure out based on the name," he said. "As we post more, team members will identify themselves as part of these teams."
Microsoft representatives did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
Rumors that Microsoft was developing an app store for Windows have been around for more than a year. Based on a series of Windows 8 documents leaked June 2010, Microsoft has reportedly been eager to match Apple at its own game by offering its own dedicated app store.
An app store appeared in a demonstration of Windows 8 that Sinofsky gave at the All Things Digital D9 conference in late June. Included in the start-up menu tiles was a direct link to a Microsoft Store, suggesting that Microsoft was working it own version of an online application store, similar to Apple's App Store.
The company has also been working hard to keep Apple from winning a U.S. trademark for the phrase App Store. Microsoft argues the phrase is too generic to register and would restrict competitors' ability to use of the term to describe their own services.
Microsoft has not officially announced when the new OS would be released, but CEO Steve Ballmer said in May that the new OS would reach consumers in 2012, although the company later said Ballmer misspoke. In June, Vice President Dan'l Lewin hinted that Windows 8 would launch during the fall of 2012.

Windows 8 is as Revolution as Windows 95

Microsoft Corp's Windows 95 truly reinvented the PC experience and revolutionized the PC industry back sixteen years ago in 1995. This week Microsoft opened up Windows 8 development blog(Visit Blog Now !) and said that its next-generation Windows 8, which will be available for public testing in the coming months, will be as revolutionary as the legendary Windows 95.
"So much has changed since Windows 95 - the last time Windows was significantly overhauled - when the 'desktop' metaphor was established. Today more than two out of three PCs are mobile (laptops, netbooks, notebooks, tablets, slates, convertibles, etc.). Nearly every PC is capable of wireless connectivity. Screen sizes range from under 10" to wall-sized screens and multiple HD screens. Storage has jumped from megabytes to terabytes and has moved up to the cloud," said Steven Sinofsky, the president of Windows and Windows Live division at Microsoft.

Although Microsoft continues to remain mum about the release date of Windows 8, many believe that the next-generation Windows will be launched in 2012. In its new blog, the world's largest designer of software plans to share how it focuses on performance, reliability, compatibility, security, and quality of Windows 8 and plans to continue the dialog around performance and fundamental engineering of Windows with its customers and end-users.
Microsoft previewed its Windows 8 in June and started by showing user experience and interface on a range of mobile devices. The graphics user interface (GUI) is one of the most important elements of operating systems as end-users interact with it every day. But Microsoft stresses that the new GUI along with compatibility with ARM-based system-on-chips are not the only innovations when it comes to Windows 8. The software giant claims it has engineered changes across the full range of Windows capabilities.

"We know people who care a lot about networking want to know our plans there. We know people who are invested heavily in storage want to know what is new in that area. Many want to know about performance and fundamentals. We know developers, IT pros, and gamers all want to know what's new for them. There is so much packed into Windows 8 and there are so many unique and important lenses through which to view Windows 8, and so we want to be sure to take the time to cover as many of these topics as possible, to build up a shared understanding of why we’ve taken Windows where we have. So in the next weeks we will just start talking specifics of features, since there is no obvious place to start given the varying perspectives. From fundamentals, to user interface, to hardware support, and more, if something is important to you, we promise we'll get to it in some form or another," said Mr. Sinofsky.

Google to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5B

Google said today that it had agreed to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, adding valuable intellectual property and getting the Internet search giant directly into the handset business.

Google said it would pay $40 a share in cash for Motorola, a 63 percent premium to the company's closing price on Friday.
The deal shakes up the Android world. For the first time, Google will have a direct hand in the mobile business that it has fostered from a distance. While it provides the Android software critical to running millions of smartphones and tablets, it has yet to get into the design and manufacturing business itself, aside from a few experimental models with handset partners such as HTC and Samsung Electronics.
With Motorola, Google also gets a treasure trove of patents to defend itself and its partners with against a rising tide of legal opposition. Over the past few months, major technology players such as Apple and Oracle have sued either Google or its partners in an attempt to slow it down competitively and extract licensing fees.
Jha talked up the strength of its patent portfolio during the company's last quarterly conference call, suggesting he may get into the legal fray as well. The company already has an outstanding dispute with Microsoft and Apple. Last month, billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed that he was pushing for Motorola to sell its patent portfolio with the need for intellectual property at an all-time high.
Motorola, along with HTC, was a major early supporter of Android. Chief Executive Sanjay Jha scrapped the company's other projects and focused solely on Android, which paid off immensely when Verizon Wireless chose its original Droid to push as its hero phone during the 2009 holiday season. The company more recently had a flagship phone come out with the Atrix for AT&T, which Chief Executive Randall Stephenson used at one point, and also partnered with Sprint Nextel. Last month, it reported stronger second-quarter results, and hinted at a stronger fourth quarter.
But the company has struggled recently. While the Atrix featured heavy promotional support from AT&T, it wasn't a breakout hit. Its first tablet, the Xoom, failed to make a dent in the market, even after a price cut. And the company's long-delayed Droid Bionic for Verizon Wireless isn't expected until next month. The 4G capability for its Xoom is still unavailable despite hyping the feature at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
It's unclear what role Motorola will play in Google, and whether it will continue to manufacture smartphones under its own brand.
Google, however, attempted to maintain its neutral stance in Android land even after the deal.
"Our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community," said Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google. "We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices."
